We have had a lot of pleasure designing and making custom garden things for our friend Daniel Ostrow, who has a beautiful and tiny garden on Potrero Hill in San Francisco. The garden was designed 36 years ago by his partner, the talented San Francisco plantsman and artist, Ed Aulerich-Sugai. Ed worked at the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco. He died of HIV/AIDS in 1994 and Daniel has preserved his legacies both by placing Ed’s art in galleries and museums and by caring for and developing his garden. Daniel allowed us to create a playful mirrored screen that enlivened a narrow walkway joining two parts of the garden. Where usually a mirror reflects back an accurate image, this mirror reflects the garden back to itself in changed form, a transmutation that Ed might have approved of. We also designed a custom water feature made in Mexico from soft cantera stone and more recently added a wooden wall to house Ed and Daniel’s bromeliad and orchid collection.

One of Ed Auerlich-Sugai's silkscreen print combining organic, natural forms to make a Japanese samurai helmet.

Another of Ed Auerlich-Sugai's silk screen prints, this one inspired by the supernatural creatures of Japanese folklore known as yōkai. Here he depicted Shoki, the demon queller. This work is in the collection at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. You can find more of Ed's work at Edaulerich-sugai.com
