Extreme gardening in this small notch garden in San Francisco. The project is tucked in the middle of a classic art deco building on a steep hill overlooking Alcatraz and the San Francisco Bay. Access involves climbing a 70 step concrete staircase and a four rung ladder. We have to duck under a 48” tall opening, squeeze through a 12” wide slot and finally descend another 12 rung custom made ladder into the workspace. Every plant, every person and every tool has to enter by this route. The garden is carved into a soft, crumbling cliff face, so the plants cling to stay in place. It never sees the sun. We introduced misters and created a ferny grotto. Our kind clients tell us this tiny space, which they view from several windows gives them the greatest pleasure.
