This city garden, which encompasses a busy sidewalk, needed to be built to last in the public zone, which can be quite brutal. We used gravel as mulch and snappy succulents for flash and a touch of psychedelia in this very publicly enjoyed Upper Haight garden. The walls and paving are original cobblestones reclaimed from under the streets of San Francisco. The curves on the ground pick up the french curve detail of the window molding. One particular pleasure in doing this garden was that we were able to add the magnificent dracaena draco tree (dragon tree) in the front strip. The idea to use this plant came from a friend of the clients. It was great to be able to contribute a rare and unusual tree, such as this one, to the urban tree forest of San Francisco.
