ABOUT

Our Approach & Values

The most important thing for us is to make gardens that people notice and love. This often means simplicity and restraint. We edit and pare things back. We keep what’s good and lose the rest.

We love the natural world.  We care that your garden is part of a larger neighborhood, not just the people next door, but also the neighborhood of animals, birds, insects and other plants. Sometimes they complicate things, but they also bring a great deal of joy.

We value conservation. We avoid using chemicals if we can. We care for and build the soil. We value what is old and beautiful. We are working on ways to reduce the use of water in gardens: to help California live within its means. We try to cut down on single use plastics in the garden by coming up with plantings that eliminate the need for irrigation. And we use battery operated tools, where possible, to reduce air and noise pollution and the consumption of fossil fuels.

We take pride in our social environment, aiming to have good relations between crew members and with our clients. We try to communicate clearly, and even over-communicate sometimes to try to rule out misunderstandings.

Finally, we have the deepest respect for the craft of gardening. It can take a lifetime to gain deep knowledge of plants and good garden design. Collectively, we have been working on it for a long time. We bring a seriousness to our craft. We are detail oriented and our motto is to take the time needed to do the job well.

The Services & Process

We are a design-build company that does residential landscaping work.

We are based in the Bay Area and our experience is with small to mid-sized urban gardens plus work on larger estates in the urban/rural interface. We work from the East Bay to San Francisco and from San Rafael to Woodside.

At the moment we are developing designs for gardens that are 100% dry (no irrigation) and also designing gardens for wildlife.

We also take on ongoing garden development and maintenance where projects are aligned with our values.

DESIGN

We will start with a preliminary meeting to see the space, to meet you and to get a feel for the project. We’ll talk about our current thinking about gardens - it changes slightly all the time.

SITE PREP

Once the design is mostly complete, the first stage of on-site work is site prep. This might involve removing a lot (or a little) of what is already in the garden.

BUILD

Building is the time when we get on with our work and realize the dream garden that we have created together and you get to watch and enjoy the process.

PLANTING

If we are creating an irrigated garden for you, our planting practice will be straightforward. If we are creating a 100% dry garden for you, planting and the establishment of plants will take place according to a predetermined seasonal calendar, so there may be a pause while we wait for rains.

INTO THE YONDER BLUE

All gardens need maintenance. Without a little gentle steering your garden can quickly go off the rails. Making sure that you have a system in place for garden maintenance is part of planning for a new garden.

Meet the Team

Lanxape is a tight group of workers trained in horticultural and garden building skills. We come from many places but are well versed in working in the California landscape. We work as a team and our connections reach beyond the workplace. We look for unique projects where we can express ourselves, use our knowledge, and do the parts of lanxaping that we know the best.

Robin White

Founder, and company President, Robin White was born into an English gardening family. His great, great, great uncle owned the Midlands Horticultural Building Company in England in the mid 19th century. His grandfather grew the family’s food on an allotment. His grandmother grew dahlias and chrysanthemums for the local gospel hall. Robin’s mother built four ornamental gardens and branched out into environmentalism and habitat gardening, running the private nature reserve network of the Somerset (UK) Wildlife Trust. Robin’s father was a landscape painter, jazz pianist and home remodeller.

Robin has gardened all his life but started working in gardens in California in 1985. He has continued as a gardener, a landscaper and a garden designer ever since. In addition, he spent 10 years working as an environmental journalist in public radio.

Robin also built a 1000 square foot house on his Oakland property as an owner-builder.

Miguel Garcia

Crew lead, Miguel Garcia, comes to Lanxape with a background in making rustic Italian furniture, growing vegetables and raising chickens. Miguel is a whizz with a Skilsaw and, like many carpenters, he has scars to show for it. Although a shy man, of few words, Miguel is a proactive team leader, and responsible analyzer of gardens. A father of two, he has been working with Robin since 2003.

Victor Guardado

Crew Lead, Victor Guardado, grew up helping on the family ranch. He rode horses to the fields and learned horticulture and arboriculture from his father. Victor is detail oriented and lends himself to any task with care and devotion. His favorite part of his work for Lanxape is watching gardens transform from start to finish. Victor has three sons and has worked with Robin since 2011.

Manuel Lopez

When he was young, crew member Manuel de Jesus Marquez Lopez helped on the family farm and tended the home’s roses and bougainvilleas. Manuel is a great pruner of fruit trees, an expert radish grower (!) and meticulous and thoughtful at stone placement. He worked for another Bay Area gardener for 5 years before starting to work with Robin in 2017.

Pablo Lopez

Manuel’s brother, Pablo Lopez, also joined the crew in 2017. Pablo worked on the construction crew for the landscape architecture firm Henning-Anderson before coming to work for Lanxape. Pablo is a talented carpenter. He likes to fish, hike, go camping and backpacking and care for his extended family.
